Short Story: A boy who wanted to commit suicide

This story was told by toastmaster Jagadish. I thought the story was very profound and meaningful for today's world.. So I am sharing it with you guys n gentle ladies.

Short Story: A boy who wanted to commit suidice
A boy who wanted to commit suicide

A boy of 16 years wanted to commit suicide. His friend asked him, "Why do you wish to end your life?". The boy answered, "I failed my 10th standard exam!I am dejected!"
His friend replied, "That's a very bad idea. After you die, you will be born again, live all the 16 years of the next life studying and writing all the exams and then attempt to pass the 10th standard exam. Why do you want to start all over again?"
The boy replied, "Yeah, you're right. I don't want to write all those horrible exams all over again. That would suck big time! I would rather pass my 10th in the next year." So they went back home after buying an ice candy from the street hawker..

Windows Tip for the day : Command Window Shortcut

If you are a software labourer like me, then at umpteen times you would have faced the situation of running a command from the command window -  The dark bland screen which blinks at you with an expression less cursor.......

"So? what's the tip?" thou asketh!

Most of the time I would have to open the command window by typing cmd.exe by opening the Run window pressing Win+R. Then begins the frustrating process of cd ing our way into the directory we seek or copy pasting the entire path from the address bar in the explorer window.

Now lets look at the Brand New method!

Lets say you are staring at the  C:\Dummy  folder in your explorer window and you want to open a command window right here. Then, press Shift+RightClick. There you will find the Open Command Window Here option in the drop down menu. Click that and Voila! You have the command prompt ready with the current directory set to C:\Dummy

Since you guys think I am a smooth talking guy who hypnotizes people into believing because of my charming personality, I have included the screenshot below for proof!

Command window shortcut
Windows shortcut for command window

So, thats it for the day folks!

The reason I do these posts is because I have come across a lot of sites that  give too many shortcuts that one can swallow in one go... We tend to forget the stuff almost immediately once we move onto the other webpage.

I hope the theatricals I provide in the blog help you remember the important stuff. Thanks for reading!

How to send smses from the internet?

How can I send messages online?

We all love to type away on our computers/laptops rather than switching to the cellphone! Don't we ?

So as usual I was loafing aimlessly on the internet and found the following websites to send SMSes online! Keeping it brief, here they are!
  1. For the Americas and the Europas use Online Text Message. The instructions are pretty simple. Not gonna ramble!
  2. For the Indian like me, use Way2SMS. You need to register  first using your mobile number. The main drawback is the number of ads you are bombarded with! But hey! Its free! Oh yeah there's a limit on the number of characters in one message....That too might cause some modern day computer related stress.

A forgotten awesome speech in Indian cinema (with English translation!)

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=-RVG-w8XUnk

For people who dont know Hindi and this movie.... This is a scene from "Krantiveer" where the actor is making an inspiring speech! It seems so real that Nana (the actor playing the protagonist in the movie) feels it intensely within himself!

The person to be hanged is convicted of killing  politicians(who are actually corrupt and traitors). He sees the people and proceeds to give a satirical mocking speech. The translation goes like this....

So you all came here to watch the comedy of my death?!!. They'll now hang me!(makes this gesture by waving his hands at 0:53). My toungue will come out like this and my eyes will pop out like that. For sometime I will sway and my brother here(referring to the hangman) will bring me down. Then you will chat your way to your home, eat and sleep away. One day your unmanliness and cowardice will witness the death of this country with the same dumbness. I have NOTHING to say to you all! NOTHING AT ALL!!! You will find no change in your life! You are habituated to darkness! You have become accustomed to living in slavery! First you served the the kings and emperors, then the British and now by the goondas and the politicians. They provoke you in the name of religious belief! and you slash each others throats!Continue to cut! (End of 1:30)

Even when the person above(God) sees you, he would be feeling ashamed.Thinking -"I created the most beautiful thing in the world - a 'huamn being'". But when God sees below, everyone has become insects! Bugs! Keep fighting, suffer and die! Come and go! The game is over! WHy do we live?-We Dont know! Why do we die!-We Dont know!(End of 1:52)

The woman of the pen(referring to the journalist in the movie) wanted to bring about a revolution. With the power of the pen she wanted to bring an end to the black present. Who understood her words?!! All of you are dead, living corpses! Whom would she awaken? I woke up! I am going after doing some good work! I have contentment!(End of 2:05)

But remember your silence today will be the tears of your children tomorrow. These lawmakers, uniformed and the politicians have sold their integrity. Where did your integrity go when you were burning each other!Into the ditches?!(End of 2:16)

This small like thing(I dont know the meaning of "pishtu".sorry!), our neighbouring country may not be able to see itself on the map in the near future. Its forgetting one aspect! The rotis(google 'roti' to see what it is and looks like) which are being made in their homes, the flour for making them is imported from foreign mills. They can't make pins in their own country have a dream of breaking our country. They can dream so because they know that this country, is a country of dead bodies. Nobody has any symapthy for this homeland. Its very easy to break this land. I am a Hindu! I am a Muslim! I am a Sikh! I am a Phalana! I am a Dhimka!(End of 2:51)

Any one can break a single stick but its difficult to break a bunch of sticks! I had read this in my childhood(see the book gesture at 2:56), in the school, in my 3rd standard! Why am I even making you understand?! I am a fool! I have hay in my head! Why am I talking to these stones!! Laugh and make merry!-"One more dog is dying in the name of revolution, tomorrow some one else will die! What for us? We will contunue to live like this!" Isn't it? Live, and continue to live however you want! I dont want to live like a eunuch!(End of 3:19)

Come on now, brother! Give it to me!(snatches the black mask and wears it )

So folks, here was my translation of one of the most profound acting by Nana Patekar of Indian Cinema! This speech though made in a movie is more animate and real than most other fakes on the stage!

Do I need to take the SCJP / OCJP exam?

So you want to become a Certified Java Programmer, eh?
Before starting off with my boring lecture I would like to tell you I am a SCJP myself. I took the exam on July 6,2010 and became a SCJP with 98%. Hope that convinces you I have some authority to speak on this topic. Its been 2 years already, have the urge to take it again....

I have met a lot of people online and in person who have varied opinions about this certification exam. There are some who take the exam for cosmetic purposes of enhancing their resume. Just that. From my experience passing the exam isn't a big deal. So this group, takes a crash course for a week, browse some exam dumps on the net (posting exam questions on the internet is illegal!!) and pass. An ex-colleague of mine with over 11 years of experience now an architect would say -  " People come to the interview saying they are SCJPs but when I asked them some questions they fall flat on their face." Its sad that such a good exam loses its credibility because of a few. If you have this mindset for having SCJP on your resume so that its easy to show off., please drop it. Its not a wrong desire to have SCJP stamped on your resume but doing it just for aesthetic purposes doesn't work out well.

There's also  a group that says certification exams are just a fad , real expertise comes by practise and experience. Though the statement isn't entirely wrong, I wouldn't call it a fad. Expertise comes not only by experience but also by study. When a new joinee - software engineer or a student works on a project, the tools he can apply are limited to only what he studied in his college. What this exam gives you is a whole set of tools and arms in your arsenal to prevent you from falling into traps and getting the work done with a professional signature.

For any Java programmer who wants to improve his skill in OO concepts, I strongly recommend to take up this exam. The only book I used  to study for the exam was "SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Study Exam 310-065 Guide" by  Sierra and Bates. I don't want to appear like a marketing agent but this book, undoubtedly has the stuff to enlighten. I find myself referring to this book frequently to refresh myself with some topics.

This exam really drills you to know the nuts and bolts of  core Java. Everything else builds on these principles. So take up this exam to be proficient in the language. As an average smart person I would advise you to study the book for a whole month and give time to absorb the concepts. By the time I took the exam I had 2 years of work experience in Java/J2EE. So it gave me a lot of insight into the stuff I missed altogether. I really wished that I had taken this exam before.

So when are you becoming a SCJP?
